The orbiting GOES-12 satellite took the above image of Hurricane Frances early yesterday.

NOAA still expects to put GOES-17 into service later this year as GOES-West at 137 degrees west, replacing GOES-15 at that orbital slot.

The GOES-S satellite, to be renamed GOES-17 after launch, will replace the GOES-15 satellite at the GOES-West orbital location of 135 degrees west later this year.

The GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) system is used to obtain data from more than 100 remote sites.

The long duration event is visible in the X-radiation measured by the satellite GOES.

This data is measured by the GOES-15 satellite which does monitor Solar X-Rays.

The first launch of the GOES-R series of satellites is scheduled for 2015.

The first GOES-R satellite is scheduled for launch in 2015.
