The genus name ''proteles'' comes from two words both of Greek origin, ''protos'' and ''teleos'' which combined means "complete in front" based on the fact that they have 5 toes on their front feet and four on the rear.

Cape foxes are sympatric with the aardwolf (Proteles cristata), the black-backed jackal (Canis meomelas), and the bat-eared fox (Octocyon megalotis) and therefore may limit their populations through competition.
