Bill S-4, Federal Law-Civil Law Harmonization Act, No. 1

The Harmonization Act is not based on the concept of uniformity, but rather on co-existence.

Honourable senators, I urge you to vote in favour of Bill S-4 entitled: the Federal Law-Civil Law Harmonization Act No. 1.

This is the third harmonization bill to be tabled by the Government and it is part of the harmonization work that was begun by the Department of Justice Canada after the new Civil Code of Québec came into force in 1994.

33.The relevance of this Decree Law Tax Since the St-Hilaire decision, the Canadian Parliament has enacted the Federal Law Civil Law Harmonization Act, No. 1, [22] which entered into force on June 1, 2001.

This is indeed a bill to harmonize federal law with the common law or the civil law, depending on the province, but it does not seek to harmonize civil law and common law.
