Heating degree-days are used primarily to estimate the heating requirements of buildings.
These are normally expressed in degree‑hours or degree-days, and such data are often referred to simply as "heating degree-hours" or "heating degree-days".
For example, a day with a mean temperature of 15.5 °C has 2.5 heating degree-days; a day with a mean temperature of 20.5 °C has zero heating degree-days.
For example, a day with a mean temperature of 7.5°C has 2.5 heating degree-days; a day with a mean temperature of 12.5°C has zero heating degree-days.
The four climate zones have been divided with the help of heating degree-days (a measure of the average annual temperature).
Heating degree days: Heating degree days calculate the demand for energy needed.
Heating Degree Days are a measure of how much heating is required in a year.

Cooling and heating degree days by country - monthly data
Cooling and heating degree days by country - annual data
The annual values of the indicator ‘Heating Degree Days’ were computed as the cumulated sum of daily ‘Heating Degree Days’ for the winter season (October – March).

The number of heating degree days, a significant indicator of the amount of energy used for heating, decreased by 1.5% compared to 2016.
Energy demand incorporates heating and cooling demand using heating and cooling degree days.
For instance, in Melbourne there are more heating days (159) than cooling days (35).
