The site is home to a colony of rare Audouin's Gulls (Larus audouinii), which is why it is a designated Natura 2000 site (ZPS FR9412001).

The Audouin's Gull is particularly vulnerable during the nesting period, and any disturbance, even temporary, can lead to lost chicks and breeding failures.

Three others, the Sooty shearwater, Yelkouan shearwater and Audouin's gull are classified as Near Threatened meaning the population is in moderately rapid decline globally.

Of great historic and natural is the Island of St. Andrew, about one mile off of the old town, characterized by the presence of wild animals, as the Audouin's Gull.

The lack of islets on these large bodies of water limits the installation of bird breeding sites for the tern and the common gull for example.
