Katrl, a Pacific white-sided dolphin living at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium, recently gave birth to a calf.
White-beaked dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) and Atlantic white-sided dolphins (L. acutus), both endemic to the N Atlantic, have overlapping ranges between Cape Cod and Davis Strait.
The northern part of the Gulf is visited by the small, common, blue, and humpback whales, as well as by the Atlantic white-sided dolphin and rarely, the killer whale.
An Atlantic white-sided dolphin and a harp seal, the previously completed skeletons, are now proudly displayed in the new Learning Commons area of the Atlantic Veterinary College.
In 1991, the Atlantic white-sided dolphin was assessed and deemed “not at risk” by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC).
However, newborn Atlantic white-sided dolphins are much larger: half the length of the adult and one-sixth of its mass!

The dusky dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obscurus) is very closely genetically related to the Pacific white-sided dolphin, but the two have been identified as separate species.
Just three cetaceans remain at the aquarium: a false killer whale, a harbour porpoise and a Pacific white-sided dolphin.

However, upon examining a female Pacific white-sided dolphin named Notty, researchers quickly realized that dolphins weren’t just well-designed.
Stop by and say hello to Chester, a young false killer whale that was rescued by the Aquarium team and now spends his days happily swimming alongside Helen, a rescued Pacific white-sided dolphin.
After her tank mate died last week, a Pacific white-sided dolphin named Helen is now the only surviving cetacean left at the Vancouver Aquarium.
A white-sided dolphin travelling with resident killer whales isn’t going to be hunted by transients because the [different species of killer whales] avoid each other, so this dolphin doesn’t have a care in the world.

Only two facilities in Canada house cetaceans: the Vancouver Aquarium, which has a Pacific white-sided dolphin, and Marineland in Niagara Falls, which holds a lone orca, Kiska, and more than 50 beluga whales.
