Unlike a dropdown menu (Combo Box option), the choices are always visible.

If a new value is entered into a Combo Box and the record saved, the value is added to the Lookup List module but it may not be added to the Combo Box drop down list.
The error only occurs if a default value is set on a Combo Box control that is only visible in Display mode (a very rare combination).
